The San Antonio Police Officers Association in conjunction with their outreach organization, Blue Cares, held a press conference on Thursday, February 17th at Northwest Center to announce a new $100,000 grant program. This new one-time funding opportunity is available to San Antonio-based nonprofits that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The grants give priority to nonprofits, schools, and faith-based organizations with deep roots in the community and a track record of working with vulnerable populations. Blue Cares will award 20 grants this year, based on immediate need.
Applications opened on the 17th and selection criteria includes an organization’s purpose and history, negative impact of the pandemic, nature and extent of problem grant money will address, and its relation to Blue Cares program goals of assisting with poverty/food insecurity, health and safety, education and mentorship, and equity and inclusion. Blue Cares presented the first $10,000 check to Meals On Wheels during the press conference. The funds helped provide hand warmers to over 4,500 clients the organization serves and 5 days’ worth of meals if there is another weather emergency.
“Every day, San Antonio Police Officers work hard to serve and protect our community and give back to those in need. Within the last year and a half, our police officers have been at the forefront of witnessing resource disparities that significantly hurt families. Our hope is to provide funding assistance to show the community we want to give back, advance trust and rebuild a stronger, more resilient community,” stated Danny Diaz, President of the San Antonio Police Officers Association.
