Volunteerism Matters: SA YES Back to Basics Project
It’s hard to believe summer has flown by and students are already headed back to class for a new year. The first day of school can be both exciting and scary for young students. We can all relate to the nervousness we felt each year with a new teacher and wishing you would have friends in your class. There was also the thrill of having new clothes and school supplies to help you get ready for the first day. Unfortunately, not all students can afford a brand-new set of school supplies, but luckily, that’s where SA YES and their Back to Basics Project steps in.
The Back to Basics project is the result of the cumulative fundraisers throughout the year by SA YES to provide children with the necessities for learning with school supply kits. As part of The PM Group’s Volunteerism Matters initiative, agency employees volunteer their time at each of the SA YES fundraising events with early mornings, late nights and weekends to raise monies for producing these kits. The PM Group looks forward to seeing the fruits of our efforts at Back to Basics when we personally hand school supplies like folders, glue sticks, tissue boxes, colored pencils and more to grinning children. Our volunteers will head to the schools to unpack, distribute, and even dance around in costumes to kick off the new school year in a big way. Since 1998, SA YES has been distributing school supplies to local students at Title 1 Elementary schools. Last year, SA YES distributed school supply kits to 27,000 students in 40 schools around San Antonio. For the 2019 school year, SA YES and agency volunteers will help distribute over 40,000 kits to 46 schools in San Antonio and Harlandale.
