Emanuel “Manu” Ginobili won four NBA titles during his 16-year career with the San Antonio Spurs, cementing his place as one of the franchise’s all-time greats. Following his retirement, the former Spurs shooting guard selected the two greatest basketball players of his career:
Michael Jordan
“I think the player that will be mentioned forever is Jordan, he’s unmatched.”
LeBron James
“Jordan touches intimate fibers for me; I grew up watching him. It’s emotional, he was a huge inspiration for me. But as a teammate, I would choose LeBron James. That kind of competitor was always tough……he’s an incredible athlete.”
The Greatest Spur?
George Gervin, David Robinson, Tony Parker and Tim Duncan all are passionately debated as the greatest San Antonio Spurs player of all time and each one is well-deserving of that consideration. But the “greatest Spur” title belongs to Manu Ginobili without a doubt. In addition to the four NBA titles he won with the Spurs, he shined while winning the Italian League Championship in 2001 and in the 2001 and 2002 Italian Cups while playing in Italy. He was named EuroLeague Finals MVP and twice earned the Italian League MVP honors. He was a two-time NBA All Star, the 2008 Sixth Man of the Year winner, and he earned a place in the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Spurs retired his No. 20 jersey.
His greatest accomplishment? In 2004, Manu led Argentina to the gold metal at the Athens Olympic Games. In a historic upset victory, Argentina defeated Team USA in the semi-finals, becoming the only country to deny the United States gold in the last nine Olympic Games.
