Hurricane Maria left her mark last year on the Caribbean Islands and, unfortunately, the effects of the hurricane are still being felt throughout Puerto Rico. Residents have been waiting as long as six months for necessities such as power and shelter. According to AdWeek, the Outdoor Advertising Association of Puerto Rico (OAAPR) has launched a project which turns paid media into aid media by providing families with a billboard tarp to protect their homes.
Instead of waiting for FEMA assistance, which can be a lengthy multi-step process, companies can directly help hurricane victims by purchasing the billboard space from the aid media project and provide a temporary roof. The sole expense is the cost to purchase and construct the billboard tarp. OAAPR has been known to show up to houses with construction workers, volunteers, food and water to help residents get back on their feet.
With the help of companies like Puma, Walmart, and Sam’s Club, OAAPR has had success in constructing nearly a thousand tarp roofs throughout the island. This campaign has become a win-win for everyone involved. Not only do these brands receive millions of impressions, but they also gain positive and lasting brand associations while making a difference in the communities of Puerto Rico as they continue to heal and rebuild.
