We’ve seen it in soccer, we’ve seen it in NASCAR, and we’ve seen it in the WMBA. Now it’s arrived in the greatest basketball league in the world. The National Basketball Association and the Board of Governors have approved a three-year pilot program to bring on-jersey advertising to the NBA and offer companies the unique opportunity to display their logo front and center on today’s NBA courts. More specifically, the patches will be located near the shoulder straps of the jerseys. Although major restrictions are not yet in place, they will typically abide by team colors.
This leap in apparel marketing should help brands to increase awareness in both their target market as well as internationally when teams travel for games. The NBA has refrained from on-jersey ads for some time, so this is definitely a historic evolution in the category. Who knows, maybe this will pave the way for the NFL to institute on-jersey branding as well.
Most teams, 29 to be exact, will sport the Nike swoosh on the other shoulder; The Charlotte Hornets will serve as the exception, electing to tote the Jordan brand jumping man instead (still a subsidiary of Nike) since the team is owned by Michael Jordan himself.
Make sure to watch an upcoming NBA game to see the snazzy new stitched-on logo patches! Share on Facebook and let us know which patch is your favorite!
