Sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who created the monument, lived and worked in San Antonio for several years, including designing early models of the monument in his studio in Brackenridge Park, according to multiple sources. His work on the project continued back and forth between San Antonio and South Dakota, where the actual mountain carving took place, according to The National Park Service.
Construction on Mount Rushmore started in 1927 and wasn’t completed until 1941. Sadly, Borglum died several months before it’s completion and his son, Lincoln, played a crucial role in completing his father’s masterpiece.
Today, nearly 3 million people visit Mount Rushmore annually that is operated by the U.S. National Park Service since 1933. The grand representations of the heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln symbolize the first 150 years of American history, according to Borglum.
Each president’s head is about 60 feet tall and carved in granite. It took hundreds of workers using dynamite, hammers, chisels and drills to carve out the presidential images. The mountain itself, at an elevation of 5,725 feet (1,745 meters), was named in 1885 for Charles E. Rushmore, a New York lawyer.
