In 2024, Argentina implemented a bold experiment to slash regulation and the size of its government, moves that are shaking up their embattled economy and drawing praise from U.S. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Argentina’s well-entrenched streamlining model – though different in important ways – offers lessons for the United States, where Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, is tearing through government departments, cutting costs and firing federal workers in a way never seen before in Washington.
Musk has met with the Argentina President Javier Milei regularly in recent months and praised his austerity and state cutbacks for helping Argentina overturn a deep fiscal deficit after years of over-spending while bringing down triple-digit inflation. Poverty remains high, though it is coming down from a peak of more than 50% last year, and the country is emerging from painful recession.
America must cut federal government waste, fraud and corruption. The last five years has seen the U.S. budget rise from 4.4 trillion dollars to 6.7 trillion in 2024. In fact, DOGE just uncovered 4.7 trillion dollars that were sent out as checks from the treasury—with no attached mention of what the checks were for!
American businesses have always operated on a sustainable budget to reach their financial goals. It’s finally time for the United States to do the same!
